You know those things you do that you don’t realize are super weird until someone calls you out?
For me it’s religiously reading the Trader Joe’s monthly newsletter. Like, I live for the Fearless Flyer. Even if I’m at school and probably not shopping there anytime soon, I just need to know what’s happening at Trader Joe’s. Weird, I know.
(But actually go check out the latest one. I tried the Avocado Citrus Greek Yogurt and it’s so good and also bright green. Super strange, I love it.)
Anyways, it was the Fearless Flyer a few months ago that alerted me to Trader Joe’s matcha single serve packets. These are life changing.
(I’m starting to realize this sounds like a paid promotion and it actually is not, I’m just very passionate)
Why? Well for one they’re so fucking cheap. And if you’re a youth-culture yuppie granola foodie like I am (unfortunate but at least I’m self-aware?) then you end up spending ridiculous amounts of money on the tiniest quantities of food.
The best example was this 1.5oz tin of matcha I used to buy at Whole Foods for $18.50. Yeah, you read that right. The best part is that the container is like, 8 or 10 ounces large, so they really make you suffer by giving you a nearly empty tin of matcha. It truly rubs it in your face, and I bet it’s impressive from some marketing standpoint that I don’t understand because I’m not an Econ major.
I don’t think the Trader Joe’s matcha is much cheaper, but it feels cheaper, and that’s what’s important, right? Also it’s portion-controlled. Which you probably didn’t think you needed to worry about when it came to uber-healthy green tea… but your wallet is stressed (and more green tea is not the answer). Anyways, I’m a sucker for the TJ matcha and that’s that. It tastes good and assuages my misplaced guilt for $7 a box. What a deal.
This (pretty ugly but honestly delicious) green smoothie combines mangos, strawberries, and spinach along with matcha green tea powder and fresh grapefruit juice, for a boost of antioxidants and vitamins A and C. Make it!
- 1 mango, peeled and seeded
- 0.2 oz matcha powder (about 1 tsp)
- 1 handful baby spinach
- 5 strawberries, halved
- Juice and flesh of half a grapefruit
- Combine all ingredients in a blender until liquid!

I can’t live w/o Trader Joe’s. I go once, often twice, a week! I’ve found great mango at TJ lately, too. Great smoothie.

The TJ mango is the best! So good and love that it’s pre-sliced 🙂

I’m sorry but in light of all the current news with regards to climate change and single use package, I really don’t think TJ or anyone else should be promoting that form of packaging anymore. It is harmful to people, animals, and the whole planet.

i’m so with you! this post was written over 2 years ago and i’m now living an (almost) zero waste lifestyle & as a consequence don’t even get produce from TJ anymore because of all the plastic. i get all my food locally and through waste diversion produce boxes like imperfect foods. 🙂 thanks for your comment!
